El Salvador Indigo Dyed Clothes
Indigo dye or Mayan Blue Dye, as its known in El Salvador, is a natural dye that comes from a type of plant, called Xiquilite. The ancient Cultures of Mesoamerica discovered that color. It seems to be one of the most enduring colors ever made by the human. There is a fermentation process to obtain the beautiful deep blue color. Mayans used to combine it with limestone and plaster to create a beautiful Maya Blue that was also used in buildings of high importance. The europeans exported this dye to the Old World during the Colonization period of Mesoamerica. Now, after the invention of sintetic blue, the production of this Indigo Dye has decreased. Although local salvadorans still feel proud of this beautiful deep blue.
