Petates made in El Salvador
The preparation of petate is associated with a task to which the indigenous people, especially women, dedicated themselves. The indigenous women stayed at home with their children and made them, while the men cultivated the land. Making a backpack takes hard work. It begins by cutting the palm leaves or reeds, then these tend to dry under the sun, in a flat place and once it is ready, one palm begins to be molded on top of another, and then the edge is made to let it take shape.
